The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: MAGA Extremist Congressman Tom Tiffany Won’t Say if He Backs Trump Effort to Limit Mail-In Voting

“Tiffany has not responded to three requests for comment…on whether he supports aspects of the rule Trump is seeking for mail-in voting”

MADISON, Wis. — New reporting from The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel underscores just how far MAGA Congressman Tom Tiffany will go to do Trump’s bidding at the expense of Wisconsinites — even if it means “sowing confusion and chaos” for hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin voters. According to the report, Tiffany has now ignored repeated requests for comment on Trump’s latest attack on mail-in voting, and this week repeatedly refused to criticize the action, despite the fact that “66,000 mail-in ballots are en route to Wisconsin voters and 36 have already been returned.”

Tiffany has previously said he doesn’t believe “we should be doing mail-in voting” — despite voting absentee himself a dozen times — voted to overturn the 2020 election, and has said he would have objected to Wisconsin’s electoral vote as well if he’d been able.

  • More than 66,000 mail-in ballots are en route to Wisconsin voters and 36 have already been returned as Trump seeks permission from the U.S. Supreme Court to place new restrictions on absentee voting ahead of November’s midterm election.

  • Tiffany has not responded to three requests for comment from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel since Aug. 27 on whether he supports aspects of the rule Trump is seeking for mail-in voting or whether he supported Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul’s lawsuit to block it.

  • When asked again whether he supports the rule at a news conference on Sept. 8, Tiffany asked a Journal Sentinel reporter to provide his campaign with information and details about the rule after the event “to provide a more fulsome answer.” After doing so, a campaign spokeswoman did not respond.

  • Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who is running for governor as a Democrat, said he opposed the new rule and supported Kaul’s lawsuit.

  • “I applaud the Wisconsin Attorney General’s decision to stand up to Donald Trump against his unlawful attempt at election interference and I object to any attempt to undercut Wisconsinites’ and all Americans’ fundamental right to cast their ballot,” Crowley said.

  • “Wisconsin already has incredibly secure elections and this is a clear effort to create problems that do not exist. Wisconsin should not turn over a single voter file as we know Trump and his MAGA allies like Congressman Tom Tiffany will use this information to try to rig the election in November.”

  • Don Millis, Republican chairman of the bipartisan state elections commission, said if the Supreme Court sides with Trump, voters who have not yet returned their ballots may decide to hand-deliver the ballots to clerks instead of trying to mail it back under the new rules because there’s a chance the Postal Service may not deliver the ballot.

  • “If you’re a clerk and you’ve received the ballot in mail, it’s going to be counted,” Millis said. “If you’re a voter and you’ve not mailed your ballot in, you have to make a decision about what you’re going to do.”

  • John Sauer, U.S. solicitor general, said in the Sunday filing the extended injunction “risks sowing confusion and chaos.”

  • “Once those ballot envelopes enter the mailstream, there is no retrieving them,” Sauer wrote in the filing to the Supreme Court.
